Pool Electrical

In Alicante a pool is almost standard in villas and estates, and every pool needs a safe electrical installation: the filtration pump panel, the pump connection, low-voltage underwater lighting and, above all, correct earthing of all metal elements.

The presence of water multiplies electrical risk, so we pay special attention to the protections and the earthing. We also install the garden and pool-area lighting with materials suited to outdoor and damp environments, creating atmosphere without compromising safety.

We work both on new pools and on bringing old installations up to date, which is the more common case in villas built before current regulations demanded what they demand today.

Around the pool, the regulations divide the space into zones by distance from the water, and each zone allows different equipment. Inside the water, only safety extra-low voltage is permitted; in the band immediately around it, equipment must carry the right ingress protection rating and ordinary socket outlets have no place. This is why you cannot simply run an ordinary garden socket or an indoor LED strip to the poolside. When we plan the lighting and the outlets we work to those limits from the start, because correcting it after the builders have finished costs far more than allowing for it.

Every metal element around the pool — ladder, handrail, the shell reinforcement, the pump body, the shower, the heat pump if there is one — must be bonded together and to the installation's earth. Without that bonding, potential differences can appear between two points a swimmer touches at the same time, and that is the dangerous scenario even when everything appears to work fine.

It is what we most often find absent in pools of a certain age, and it is not visible to the eye: it has to be measured. In salt-chlorination pools the check matters even more, because salt water conducts better and accelerates corrosion of metal parts and of the connections themselves.

A hot tub arrives in a crate, like furniture, and almost always after the terrace is finished. That is where the misunderstanding starts: the buyer assumes it plugs in. Electrically it is not just another appliance — the heater and the pump can draw for hours at a stretch, which is why the manufacturer's manual asks for a dedicated circuit and its own RCD. Feeding one off an extension lead, or hanging it on the garden socket, is precisely what we get called out to undo.

Placement matters too. Near water the same distance logic applies as around a pool, so the protection enclosure, the connection box and any socket have to sit where they are permitted and carry the right ingress protection rating. And because the unit usually arrives last, the run is surface-mounted: we set it out along a line of the building rather than across the middle of the terrace, and the metalwork of the assembly joins the bonding described in the section above.
