The coloured houses facing the sea have a recurring problem: the RCD trips when it rains or after several days of easterly wind. It is neither coincidence nor a faulty RCD. Damp penetrates the thick walls and reaches old conduit where the cable insulation has already aged, and that is where the leakage appears — correctly detected by the RCD.

Replacing the RCD solves nothing; the damp section has to be located. That is done by measuring insulation circuit by circuit, which also shows how much margin is left in the rest of the installation. The repair usually means renewing that section with watertight conduit, and sometimes rerouting it away from the wall face exposed to the sea.
