The design starts by walking the property and deciding where someone would actually get in, not by counting how many sensors will fit. That visit is what separates a system people act on from one they learn to ignore.

These are two different products and it is worth knowing which you are buying. A self-monitored alarm sends the alert straight to your phone and you decide what to do: call a neighbour, call the police, or check the camera. A monitored alarm passes that work to an operator at a receiving centre who verifies the activation and raises the alarm, and that connection is an activity reserved to companies on the private security register.

For a main home with someone nearby, a self-monitored system is usually enough and carries no monthly fee. For a second home empty half the year, or a shop with stock, third-party verification has real value. We tell you plainly which one you are buying rather than selling a single format.

An alarm that goes off for no reason ends up switched off, and then it protects nothing. The usual causes are avoidable: a detector facing a window with direct sun on it, another at the wrong height in a house with a dog, or a draught moving a curtain. The fix is choosing the right detector type and position, not turning the sensitivity down until it no longer works.

The other classic failure is depending on a single path. A system that only alerts over wifi goes silent if the power or the router drops, so a backup battery and a mobile-network fallback stop being an extra. In coastal second homes it matters especially, because attempts cluster in the off season, when the estate is half empty.
