In Alicante, with so much sun during the day, a battery lets you use at night the energy you generated in excess. What a self-consumption battery is for

Without a battery, the energy your panels produce and you don't use right away is exported to the grid. With a battery, that energy is stored to use when the sun is gone: at night or during consumption peaks. Its three main benefits are:

• More self-consumption: you use your own energy instead of buying it expensively at night.
• Backup during outages (if the battery has a backup function): the home keeps power even if the grid fails.
• Less exposure to rising electricity prices.

What battery capacity you need

Capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and is sized to your night-time consumption, not to the roof size. For an average Alicante home, a battery of 5 to 10 kWh is typical. The price depends on the capacity, on whether your current inverter accepts a battery or has to be replaced, and on whether you want backup during outages.

Can you add a battery to panels already installed?

Yes, in most cases. There are two routes:

1. Hybrid inverter: if your inverter is already hybrid, you simply connect the battery.
2. AC-coupled battery: if your inverter doesn't support a battery, a dedicated module is added without replacing the whole system.
