Alicante's heat arrives and with it the rush to get the air conditioning running. But before the climate installer mounts the split on the wall, there is one part that decides whether the unit will work well all summer or keep giving you trouble: the electrical installation. An air conditioner is one of the most demanding loads in the home, and plugging it into "any old socket" is the number-one cause of breakers tripping in the middle of August.
Why air conditioning needs its own circuit
An AC unit draws a lot of current, especially when the compressor starts. If you plug it into a circuit that already feeds the TV, the fridge or the kitchen, that circuit runs at its limit — the result is breakers tripping, cables overheating and, in the worst case, a risk of fault or fire.
That is why a proper installation uses a dedicated circuit: a line that runs straight from the panel just for the AC, with its own breaker sized for the unit's power. That way the AC works comfortably and doesn't compromise the rest of the home.
What we check before installing
When clients call us to prepare the electrical side of an AC unit, we check:
- The contracted power. Adding one (or several) AC units may mean raising your power. If so, you'll need a certificate — we explain this in what the electrical certificate is.
- The electrical panel. There must be room and protections for the new line. An old or saturated panel needs reinforcing or replacing — see electrical panel in Alicante.
- The cable cross-section. It must be sized for the unit's current; a thin cable overheats and loses efficiency.
- The RCD and the earthing. The AC is connected to the mains and must be protected and correctly earthed.
One split, several splits or ducted
A small bedroom split is not the same as a ducted system for the whole home. The more units and the more power, the greater the load on the panel and the more important it is to plan the electrical installation from the start. If you are thinking of cooling the whole house, it is also worth considering more efficient solutions such as an air-source heat pump (aerotermia), which heats, cools and produces hot water with lower consumption.
Do it before the heat peaks
The most common mistake is leaving it until July, when every installer is overbooked and you are already sweating. Preparing the electrical side in advance — dedicated circuit, protections and, if needed, a power increase — means switching the AC on the first hot day without anything tripping.
